Trip to Germany

Day 7: Munich to London, London to Seattle

Back to Germany overview
Back to day 6, our last day in Munich

Up at 4:00 AM, we checked out at 4:37 AM and waited for the airport shuttle which cost 75 DM or about $35. The shuttle arrived at 5:00 AM: a black Mercedes Benz S Class diesel, driven by a middle-aged woman. The car had been driven 396,000 km (246,000 miles) in about six years and she said that the engine was a bit tired now: it could only go 180 kph (111 mph) whereas when it was newer it went 220 kph (136 mph). We drove to the airport at about 140 kph (87 mph) even though due to fog there were electronic signs that said the speed limit was 100 kph (62 mph). The S-Class was very roomy, smooth, and quiet.

At the beautifully clean Munich airport we boarded our flight to London, only to learn that London was fogged in and we would have to wait to depart for 2 hours. At 9:41 AM we departed London and immediately upon rising into the sky I saw this very interesting bit of farm land. I have no idea what it is for.

German farmland, with an unusual design.

We had another two hours to wait in London (it would have been 4 if we had not had the 2 hour delay on the ground in Munich), and then we boarded another extremely packed, hot, crowded, crammed 747 British Air flight to Seattle.

Here we see the northwest coast of Iceland, due north of Akureyri.

Just west of the previous photo was this interesting Icelandic island.

The west coast of Greenland then was visible, with its icy glaciers melting into the water. It was pretty frustrating to be sitting in a seat on a airplane where it was 88°F and only one foot from my head the air was 75°F below zero!

Here is more of the west coast of Greenland, north of Godhavn. Note the icebergs!

Here is the Great Slave Lake in Canada. This is the ninth largest lake in the world, and is the deepest lake in North America at 2,014 feet deep. It is 20-150 miles wide and 276 miles long.

Here are the Canadian Rockies near Banff and Jasper, Alberta Canada.

After 4,800 miles of travel, we were ready for home. We both craved a nice cold drink with ice in it, but every day since then I have drifted back in my thoughts to Munich. It is a great city!
